Requirements: Successful Completion of an apprenticeship program approved by the CA Apprenticeship Council, the BAT, or a state Apprenticeship Council authorized by the Federal Bureau of Apprenticeship Training.

General Electrician
Requirements: 8,000 hours of work for an electrical contractor installing, constructing or maintaining electrical systems covered by the National Electrical Code.

Residential Electrician
Requirements: 4800 hours of work for an electrical contractor installing, constructing, or maintaining electrical systems covered by the National Electric Code.

Voice Data Video Technician
Requirements: 4000 hours of work for an electrical contractor installing, constructing or maintaining any system that falls within the scope of National Electrical Code, Articles 725, 770 (non-composite cables only), 800 (non-hybrid cables only), 810 and 820.

Fire/Life Safety Technician
Requirements: 4000 hours of work for an electrical contractor, involving the installation, construction or maintenance of systems as covered in Article 760 of the National Electrical Code.

Nonresidential Lighting Technician
Requirements: 2,000 hours of work installing, repairing and maintaining nonresidential lighting while employed by a contractor engaged in the business of nonresidential lighting maintenance and retrofit installations.

The 14 hour requirement must include the following subjects:

  • 1 hour of Workers Compensation Education
     
  • 1 hour of Workplace Safety Education
     
  • 1 hour of Business Practices
     
  • 1 hour of Advanced Building Code Module

The remaining hours may cover general subject matter.

If you obtained your first license on or after September 1, 2005, you are not required to complete any continuing education during this cycle.

If you obtained your first license between September 1, 2004 and August 31, 2005, you are required to complete 7 hours of continuing education for this renewal cycle.

All licensees are required to take the 4-hour Building Code Core Course within 2 years of initial licensure. This is a one-time requirement. The Building Code Core Course is not a renewal requirement; however, the hours may be applied to your required continuing education.

You may only receive credit for taking a course one time during any renewal cycle – duplicate courses will not be credited toward your requirements.

You can only receive credit for courses that are approved by the Electrical Contractors’ Licensing Board, which are being offered by approved Continuing Education Providers. Please verify that provider and course approvals are current at www.MyFloridaLicense.com. Credit cannot be earned for expired courses or courses offered by expired providers.

If you grandfathered your registered license during this renewal cycle, you are required to complete all 14 hours of continuing education.
